What is the purpose of advertising? Can it move beyond primarily selling stuff? Do you ever find yourself justifying your job?
Beers for Good is a meet-up for people in advertising who are interested in making a positive difference together. On the second Tuesday of every month, we invite someone to share their experience of making a positive change. We intend to share questions, challenges and discuss ways we can use our creative skills for good.
This month, we’ve invited Jon Alexander, ex-planner at AMV BBDO and Fallon, to share his story. After seven years in advertising, Jon set up something called the New Citizenship Project to explore a question – “What if we thought of ourselves as Citizens, not Consumers?” Through his research and working with organisations like the BBC, Jon found that, not only is this shift already happening, it represents a massive creative opportunity. Jon calls this shift, in the role of people in society, the Citizen Shift. As advertisers, can we play a role in catalysing this shift? Do we want to? Rather than thinking of people as Consumers, which leads us to ask only what we can sell to them, what if we thought of people as Citizens, and asked what it is they can participate in and contribute to? We’re looking forward to exploring these questions at Beers for Good.
