It's 2015 and Geeks in the Peaks is back!
We’ll be at the Fieldhead Campsite (www.fieldhead-campsite.co.uk) [53.37N 001.82W], in Edale, Derbyshire; 300 metres from the Train Station. A 30-minute train ride from Sheffield along the scenic Hope Valley Line (frequent service, £7 Single fare) or 20 mile by cycle/car. There is only camping available, facilities include: modern toilet/shower/disabled facilities, indoor washing up area, drying room, hot water, dogs welcome. No fires or units liable to burn the grass - disposable BBQs (tin foil units) are not permitted. Bring your own electricity (USB batteries, solar panels, dynamos etc.).
What’s going on? The emphasis is enjoying the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated by your computer monitor, with plenty of group activities including (but not limited to) kite-flying, climbing, bouldering, walking, ballooning, star gazing, mountain biking and trail cycling, as well as mapping and geo-caching. There’s no obligation to stick in a single group. We’ll wing it very much based on the weather. There won’t be special guest talks, but this is really about the social. Having said that, there’s nothing to stop you from holding quiet geeky discussions into the early hours (camp silent hours are 2230-0730). Don’t be surprised if it turns into a hub for sharing ghost stories by the end of the night.
What to bring: You will need to bring your own camping gear (the resourceful will borrow/share equipment). We’ll look at a communal meal on Saturday evening and there is a small shop, a Café and 2 Pubs in Edale but a few provisions might be wise, if only to make camp bread and pizza. Leave your ghetto blasters at home. What next? Keep up-to-date with the latest developments via: @geeksinthepeaks
