I will describe a project in collaboration with a software company called xDesign who are building a system to monitor road quality. I will present some promising results from an experiment where xDesign proved it was possible to detect potholes using mobile phone accelerometer when the phone was mounted on the dashboard. I will describe the statistical methodology in R which involved concepts of distance between two time series library(TSclust), compression of high dimensional data for visualisation library(Rtsne) and tree-based supervised learning library(randomForest).
