Would you be interested in joining me for a visit to The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Benjamin exhibit at the Jewish Museum next Saturday? Can we view the show and talk about it afterward at the central park?
Benjamin’s writings are a huge influence for me. When I was studying visual culture in Chicago, I was introduced to Benjamin’s work via Buck-Morss’ The Dialectics of Seeing. Arcades project is a work of passion (fever of a sort), a meticulous archive that reveals inner workings of cities and capitalism. I often think about Benjamin’s writings, especially these days, with the resurgence of fascism and banality in everyday life. I honestly find Arcades Project a little bit hard to read, the melancholy which shadows the book is overwhelming. However, his poetic works in One-Way Street and Belin Childhood gives a sense of possibility for alternate ways of living, remembering and taking care.
So, if you want to join me and a couple of friends, please sign up in this page. Meet us at the lobby of Jewish Museum at 4 pm. Admittance if free on Saturday. We will go out to the Central Park around 5:45 pm and find a spot to sit and talk. Bring blankets, wine, snacks and drinks for the hangout.
Open to anyone who wants to participate.
